INDIAN VENTURE CAPITAL JOURNAL

Volume 1, Issue 5
Issue Code: IVCJ01-05(Jan-mar07)

The Indian Venture Capital Journal is a unique single point of resource for pertinent information in the VC/PE space and intends to provide a forum to share and debate issues relating to it. This fourth issue is a continued effort to present in-depth quality research and analysis of various sectors pertaining to the VC/PE space in India providing a plug in the gaping hole of information in this stratum.

In this issue, the editors have chosen to explore the evolution of the Energy sector in India, and what this means for PE funding. With the Indian economy galloping at a tremendous pace, it is vital for the country to ensure a consistent supply of energy to sustain its growth rate. Acting on the need of the hour, the Indian Government has undertaken steps to maximise the energy output from the available resources. Consequentially, the conventional energy sectors such as coal, oil and natural gas have been thrown open to FDI and private investors.

The  government   dominatedpower  sector,  which  was financed largely through budgetary support and external borrowings, was opened to private investments in 1991. The dire need of greater funds in the power sector cannot be over stressed. To further combat the energy deficiency in the country, the relatively unexplored renewable energy sector is gaining importance. Venture capitalists and private equity players are eying this emerging, capital-intensive sector as a lucrative investment option.
